Welcome to the last fall edition of ‘Wearing Lately.’

This is easily one of my favorite things to share on the blog, albeit the most time consuming (the posts are LONG and there are lots of links). But I know you guys love it too, so it’s definitely worth the effort. The last few weeks I have been really happy with my outfits. Though there are certainly a few things I’ve been wrestling through.

Here’s a look at what I’ve been wearing.

Dress, Pyne & Smith, SS’17 | Pima Micro Rib Scoop Neck Tee (M), Everlane | Tights, old (super cute option) | Clog Boots (42), No.6 | Canvas Tote, old (similar)

I’ve recently felt more inspired to wear dresses. Wool tights are a serious answer to the warm question, and wearing a dress is a nice change of pace from fall and winter’s steady stream of jeans. I recreated this look from last winter and enjoyed it just as much this go-round.

Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Raglan Sweater, 5+ years old, (similar) | Jeans, Vintage 505’s | Boots, (exact) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

The peat coat! I have been wearing this a ton. The dark brown-green shade is such a lovely addition to my wardrobe. It feels sophisticated like black, but a little more interesting. As stated previously, this is my second try with the Cocoon Coat. Last year, I bought it in gray in my true size, 6 and I felt silly nearly every time I wore it. I believe the reason is two fold – the light gray color doesn’t work well for me, and it felt especially exaggerated in the oversized shape. The peat, which I bought in a size 4, fits a tiny bit smaller, and looks better because of the dark (and better suited for me) shade.

I love the warm earth tones of this look, but styling them causes me some sticking points. I’ve  struggled a bit with how to retain a little edge in my look when wearing the soft, warm tones. It’s easy to look edgy when wearing black, but I admire people who do it while sporting other shades. It takes true style!

Jules Cardigan (S), c/o Curator | White Button Up (similar) | Waffle Knit Sweater (S), c/o Everlane | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) | Boots, Loeffler Randall, FW’16 (similar option, super cute too!) | Classic Shoulder Bag, Cuyana | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady

This outfit was such a fun collision of pieces. Layered much more than normal, I was super cozy. I waffle between overthinking a color palette to not thinking about it much at all. If I overthink this one, I feel a little unsure. But if I just roll with it, I think it looks pretty good.

Juliette Jumper, c/o L’Envers | Liza High Waist Straight Leg Jean (28), Reformation | Clog Boots (42), No.6 | Circle Crossbody Bag, Minnie + George

Simple and warm does the trick. Love this dark and rich palette. Been enjoying this bag by Minnie + George, which was made by hand (no machines!) in Portland. Find out why hand stitching is stronger in my interview from the archives with the founder and designer of Minnie + George.

Long Puffer (M), c/o Everlane | Alpaca Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Liza High Waist Straight Leg Jean (28), Reformation | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith, Undyed Leather, 2cm heel

This was the day I discovered how amazing SmartWool no shows are. According to all the comments on Instagram, I am late to the party on this one, but it’s a very worthy party to attend! I picked up these socks recently at Nordstrom Rack and they are cold weather game changers!! They are keeping my feet toasty, but staying nice and hidden inside my booties. Bonus: they’re made in the USA!

Stutterheim Rain Jacket
Rain Jacket (M), Stutterheim | Cardigan no19 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | British Tee, c/o Zappos | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) |  Rain Boots (10) c/o Alice + Whittles, use the discount code SLOWFASHION to save 10% | Backpack, c/o Everlane, SS’17, (similar)

A cold, rainy day uniform of sorts. It thrills me that I can be dressed as ‘tactical’ as ever for the weather, but still present as stylish and considered. Very happy with this outfit.

Jules Cardigan (S), c/o Curator | Chambray, J.Crew SS’16, (similar in relaxed fit) | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Backpack, c/o Everlane, SS’17, (similar) | Legacy Hoops, ABLE

I am very happy with the layering and color palette here. Looking back over some posts from this time last year, I feel like I was struggling with all the components of keeping warm and dry. This year I feel a lot better about my choices. When I left the house I added my Cocoon Coat and I felt great!

Sweater Coat, Aritizia, color from FW’17 | Relaxed Silk Shirt (6), Everlane |  Wide Pant (S), Lauren Winter, FW’16 | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Backpack, c/o Everlane, SS’17 (similar) | Legacy Hoops, ABLE

My son had a Christmas program at his school and, in true WAHM fashion, I took it as an opportunity to dress up a bit. This coatigan + the wide pants are a tried and true combo I can rely on, and they came through in a pinch when Outfit A didn’t pan out in real life like I thought it would in my head.

I was very excited to try out these Day Boots with wide leg pants, and they did not disappoint. Sometimes my clog boots are too chunky, and my Boss Boots are too pointy, but these were juuuuuust right. The perfectionist in me is pleased, but the minimalist in me is grimacing.

Waffle Knit Sweater (M), Everlane | Clyde Work Pant (4/R), in cotton twill, Elizabeth Suzann, SS’17 (similar in cotton canvas) | Clog Boots (42), No.6 | Backpack, c/o Everlane, SS’17 (similar) | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady

Another home run outfit for me. These boots look especially good with these pants. The cozy sweater and comfy (yet unique and stylish) pants turned out to be a perfect wintry-weather day outfit.

There you have it. What I’ve been wearing lately. As always I love when you weigh in with your styling thoughts!

Wearing Lately: Quick Edition

I was looking through my photos last night and I realized I had a handful of outfit snaps from the last few weeks that I haven’t shared on the blog yet. The outfits are simple, redundant even, but each one made me happy so I wanted to share here.

Hat, made by mom several years ago | Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Claude Cardigan (S/M), L’envers | Mock Bodysuit (M), c/o Fauxgerty | High Rise Straight Jean (28), AGOLDE | Clog Boots (42), No.6 | Classic Shoulder Bag, Cuyana

I’m in love with this cozy winter look. I discovered that this cocoon jacket goes really well with a beret style hat my mom knitted for me many years ago. They are both shades of green, not matching, but not clashing either, they coordinate yet add an element of depth to the overall color palette.

Relaxed Silk Shirt (6), Everlane (very similar) | Jeans, vintage Levi’s 505’s, Etsy | Boots, c/o M.Gemi (Made in Italy)| Legacy Hoops, ABLE

I wore this to a casual holiday party and love how it came together. This silk top is one of my go-to’s for when I want to feel dressy and effortless at the same time. These boots make the simplest of outfits feel chic. Sadly they are sold out. M.Gemi makes some of the nicest boots I’ve ever seen, and I imagine they’ll be back with more fun prints next winter. For now they still have some really cute styles, including these suede ones.

Sweater Coat, Aritizia, color from FW’17 | Denim Jumpsuit (M), REIFhaus (same in hemp canvas) | Merino Turtleneck, thrifted (similar in cotton) | Boots, Loeffler Randall, FW’16 (similar option, super cute too!) | Backpack, c/o Everlane (similar)

This was a look that came together better than I expected. I am a big fan of how this jumpsuit fits, and paired with a wool turtleneck, it was perfect for cold weather. I tried to do the cool, exposed sock thing (which is harder than it looks) with mixed results. My legs were warm though!

Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Cashmere Rib Sweater (M), Everlane | White, Modern BF Jeans (28, with altered waist), Everlane (probably more like this fit) | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith, Undyed Leather, 2cm heel | Backpack, c/o Everlane (similar)

I wish I had started tracking wears on this jacket after I bought it, because it has quickly become a workhorse. The reasons: it fits over everything, the color is outstanding (dark, warm mossy green), and it’s warm, but not heavy or bulky. It also does a remarkable job making my outfits feel ‘finished.’ I can’t recommend this one enough. Size down 1x if you decide to try it.

Cashmere Rib Sweater (M), Everlane | Clyde Work Pant (4/R), in cotton twill, Elizabeth Suzann, SS’17 (similar in cotton canvas) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10)

Clearly I have a thing for olive and ivory right now. But let me tell you about these shoes that have been on my wishlist for more than a year! I finally caught them on sale around the holidays (I think it was green Monday or something) and I decided to make the purchase. They feel so good on my feet. They are 10x warmer and more comfortable than my Converse (these are made from 14oz. cotton canvas!), AND they are made in the US. I love it when I find an item in the style I want from a company whose values align with mine.

I hope your holidays were relaxing and wonderful. I have some great posts planned for this month – stay tuned!

2 Weeks of Styling –> 2 Linen Jumpsuits

With a true slow fashion mindset I’ve been wearing two gorgeous linen jumpsuits for a few weeks offline, with the intent of compiling all my looks and thoughts here. It has been hard keeping them a secret for the last month or so, but I wanted to give myself time to test them out and review my thoughts on fit/style/function.

I didn’t end up wearing them two weeks straight through, but in those two weeks I wore them more days than I didn’t. Spoiler alert: I love them!

But first, make sure you read Tuesday’s post, which is an introduction to the beautiful brand muumuu. I summed up their collection in one sentence, and you can find out why I like it so much.

This post is not sponsored, but I did receive these garments in exchange for sharing my thoughts on them.

When I was browsing muumuu’s current four-piece line up, I was immediately excited about the Apron Jumper. The color, shape and materials are all elements I love. But upon chatting with founder and designer Jess Mahaney, she asked if I’d give the Coverall a try as well. I’ve never fancied myself a coverall person, in fact, it’s one trend that I thought I’d forever sit out. When I tried muumuu’s coverall, I surprised myself by being all in.

The Coverall

I won’t lie, when I first put this on, I felt a bit like I should be headed to the underside of a car. But I had a mini style session with my shoes and sweaters and my husband’s ear, and fell hard for the Coverall.

The Coverall is made from 100% Japanese linen in a mid weight. I’m wearing a size medium which measures (when flat) 20.5″ at the waist, 21.5″ at the hips and 26″ at the inseam. There is a drawstring at the back to create a more tapered waist if you so desire.

How I Styled It:

–> With boots and a cardigan. — Donning a black sweater and black boots seemed like a natural pairing for this ‘Redwood’ colored Coverall. These casual boots work well with the vibe of this jumpsuit. I really like the length and the opening of the leg.

–> With high tops and a leather jacket. — Love this pairing so much! Warm, casual, cool.

–> With heeled boots out to a concert. — We had a fun holiday performance to go to this night. At first I thought I’d need to change, but then I switched house slippers for leather boots, and added a nice jacket and bag, and felt pretty darn good.

–> With simple warm-toned accessories. — This is probably what I’d consider my least successful outfit with the Coverall. I like the bag with it, but the shoes aren’t working for me. Maybe if they were mules?

–> With long, cream layers on top. — I wore this on Monday and LOVED it. So comfy, so casual, but still chic. It was cold so I kept adding layers until I was warm! Paired with: PF Flyers, Hackwith Design Cardigan (no longer available) and Clyde Trench by Elizabeth Suzann.

Bottom line thoughts on the Coverall:

I feel like a cool mom in this. I mean that in the best sense of the phrase. I’m not desperate to feel young and cool, but I’m definitely interested in it. This is the epitome of an easy outfit. I love how Jess put it, it’s like the lazy version of a button up shirt because the pants are included. Lazy dressing never felt (or looked) so good.

The Coverall is scandalously comfortable. It’s midweight linen, so it has body, but is not heavy like canvas or cotton. When it’s time to use the restroom, I unbutton the top, and shimmy it down. The shimmy factor depends on how snug I’ve pulled the drawstring in the back. I can also untie it for easier removal.

I found the fit of the medium to work well for me. I prefer to roll the sleeves a bit if I’m not layering with it. The waist on the Coverall is slightly dropped, which I think is an intentional part of the style. That feels a little different to me because I am so used to high waisted garments. However I think the laid back vibe of the Coverall would be lost if the waist were higher.

The Apron Jumper

The Apron Jumper was love at first try on. The combination of the soft scrunchy waist, the crossback and the hour glass shape immediately won me over. And the beautiful, warm brown shade doesn’t hurt!

This jumpsuit is made from 100% Japanese linen in a mid weight. Laid flat the garment measures 20″ at the hips with a 11″ rise, the inseam is 30″. The shoulder straps cross at the back of the jumpsuit and pass through small belt loops at the sides before tying in the front.

How I Styled It:

–> With light neutral layers. — It was cold so I opted for a longer sweater to keep my torso warm.

–> Dressed up for a holiday party. — I loved this look so much. I felt chic, effortless and confident. Paired with black heels, a long sleeve tee, and a crossbody clutch.

–> Cozy with chocolate and dark tones. — I love the mockneck with this, and I added the chunky cardigan as my jacket when I headed out.

–> Casual with high tops and rolled cuffs. – Another fun win with this jumpsuit.

The Apron Jumper is decidedly feminine compared to the tomboy-ish Coverall. I think, for this reason, it’s slightly more versatile. I can dress it up or wear casual tennis shoes with it. I love how flattering the shape is. I had been plowing my way through some Christmas cookies when I took these photos, and this jumpsuit actually made me look better than I did.

The Apron Jumper is just as comfortable as the Coverall. I can see myself wearing this with a tank and sandals in the spring and summer. Using the facilities is slightly easier than the Coverall, I just untie the sash, and loosen the straps so I can pull it down like overalls.

The fit of the medium works well for me. The 30″ inseam is a nice length and you can see on some of the days I even cuffed the legs a bit. The construction of the Apron Jumper makes it work well for people of varying heights. I am 5’7 and I think it could easily work for someone shorter or taller than me.

Whew, this post got long fast! I am excited to finally share these pieces with you, and I hope you love them as much as I do. Be sure to let me know if there is anything I missed or if you have any additional questions. If you’re interested in supporting muumuu you can visit their online shop or follow them on Instagram.

Meet MOIMOI’s Minimalist Crossbody

Note: This post is NOT sponsored, but MOIMOI sent me this bag as a gift for me to style and share on the blog.

Over winter break I’ve been testing out a new Finnish-designed, leather crossbody bag. It’s one of those ultra simple, veggie tanned, sleek bags that will likely stand the test of time and trends.

The maker is MOIMOI, a small brand based in Helsinki, Finland, where the bags are designed before they’re made in Spain. Their mission is to support similar-minded small companies and pay fair salaries for artisans, and the materials they use.

The bags MOIMOI makes are the kind that get better with use and age. I really like this bag (the Laura handbag in brown) because of its ultra-minimalist design. It doesn’t distract from an outfit but, instead, subtly complements it. It’s big enough to hold the bare essentials and no more, keeping it light on my shoulder when I wear it.

Styled.

Here’s how I’ve been wearing my MOIMOI bag over the last few weeks.

This was my New Year’s Eve outfit (we took the kids out to dinner and ice cream). Worn with my cocoon coat, thrifted turtleneck, vintage jeans and M.Gemi boots (c/o).

Confession: I only wore this outfit for half the day. When we headed out, I swapped the cotton cardigan for some serious layers, and switched the booties for sneakers with ankle coverage. MOIMOI bag worn with Paloma Wool tee and Kamm pants.

Matchy-matchy here with my beloved chambray shirt, vintage jeans and L’envers cardigan. I put on a big black coat, because winter, and I loved the pop of brown against all the dark.

I love the simplicity of this design so much. It truly does look good with everything. This outfit has been my winter uniform of late. I wear my vintage jeans multiple times per week, very often with a cozy, pullover sweater on top. Sneakers are by PF Flyers.

If you’re in the market for a minimalist leather bag, MOIMOI has a great selection. I’m sporting the Laura in brown and I think the Marlin Bucket Bag in small is quite cute. They also have some good looking men’s items, including a smart work bag.

You can use the code ANDREA10 to save 10% through mid-March.

This post is NOT sponsored, but MOIMOI sent this bag to me as a gift for me to style and share on the blog. If you make a purchase with the Andrea10 discount code, I will make a small commission. Thank you for supporting brands who support ethical manufacturing and this blog!

Simple Holiday Outfit Formula

$

0

When I was a young 20-something fresh out of college, I remember so clearly my first company holiday party. It was an election year, and the TV station I worked at was feeling flush, so they decided to go big for the night, renting out a fancy country club, complete with a cocktail hour and a sit down dinner. My girlfriends and I lined up dates, put on sleeveless dresses in the dead of winter and had a blast.

Ever since then, the term ‘holiday party’ has drummed up positive associations in my Christmas-loving mind. I am a big fan of all the celebrations this time of year — everything from intimate parties, to holiday concerts, to work parties. I love the chance to step out with my husband (who was at that aforementioned holiday party, though we were not dating at the time), converse with other adults, eat, drink, trade gifts, and do all things merry. Everyone seems to be in an extra festive mood and it’s usually a jolly time.

Naturally, my very first thought when these occasions arrive: What should I wear?

Okay, I’ll be honest, that’s my first thought when any occasion arrises! I absolutely love outfit planning. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I keep a running list of outfit ideas on my phone that I log as they pop into my head. The same goes for holiday outfits this year. I’ve dreamed up a few versions of what would be fun to wear, and today I’m sharing with you the one that’s the most realistic to my life and current tastes.

THE FORMULA: Black top + Faded jeans + Black pumps

Black is my personal fail-safe any time I need to feel remotely chic or dressed up. It’s really hard to fail with black (unless, maybe, you forget your lint roller). I like black paired with faded jeans because it’s a little unexpected and contrasts nicely. When I wear a black top, I usually feel I need to anchor it with black shoes or offset it with light (nude, tan, or print) shoes. In this case, the jeans already offset the black top, so I prefer the anchor concept. The look is chic and reads effortless. See a similar example of this formula here.

BLACK TOPS:

I prefer a long sleeve because you don’t have to concern yourself with an extra layer to keep your arms warm. Usually, a long sleeved shirt topped with a smart jacket suffices. I have a couple go-to black long sleeved tops for those occasions when I want to dress up a bit. My long sleeved black button up, and this wrap top. The wrap top is nice because the fabric and the shape are very forgiving. It’s a nice, thick jersey which wears well and keeps me on the warmer side. My long sleeved black button up is super chic, because it’s silk. That makes it fun, but I also find I rarely wear it because it seems fussy. I think a black oxford could be an equally chic option, especially if you roll the sleeves and layer delicate gold necklaces with it. I also love the idea of a fuzzy sweater with statement earrings.

FADED JEANS:

What I really mean by faded jeans is vintage jeans. If you’ve been around here any amount of time, odds are you’ve seen me wear the jeans pictured above over and over. But for a lot of people, vintage jeans are hard to come by. They can be difficult to shop for online because the fit varies and it’s hard to tell how old they really all. Thankfully, jean construction has come a long way in recent years and thick cotton, vintage-esque jeans aren’t as hard to come by as they used to be.

The closest thing I’ve seen to vintage jeans are the Lindsey Jean by Esby. They are faded to the perfect shade of blue, have a shrunken fit and gorgeous copper rivets. However all that distressing comes with a price tag. The Lindsey Jean retails for $298.

The next closest thing I’ve seen – and can attest to from personal experience – are jeans by the brand AGOLDE. I recently bought the Remy High Rise Straight and the thick cotton, button fly and copper rivets remind me a lot of my vintage pairs. These are 99% cotton and 1% elastane, and, because the denim is thick, the stretch is barely noticeable. I had to wear them a few days to get them to loosen up and form to my body, just like the vintage pairs I own. I have the Wink wash which is a classic blue. AGOLDE also makes the Pinch Waist High Rise, and I think they are so cute. If I were in the market for a new pair of jeans, this is probably what I would buy. The wash is perfectly distressed and the kick flare cuts a great silhouette. I’ve seen the Riley High Rise Crop on a few people, and this one has a great vintage vibe too. The fit and the wash are slightly more understated than the Pinch Waist.

Lastly, ABLE has a few pairs of vintage-esque jeans. The Nelly Vintage is a mid-rise with a fitted shape and a straight, cropped leg. The fabric is light wash, lightweight, and is made from 75% cotton and 25% lyocell, which means a non-stretch fit in a super soft material. If you’re looking for a little more visual interest, the Kenny Vintage has extra distressing, complete with a few strategically placed holes.

If vintage is what your heart truly desires, I suggest trying Etsy. If you’re in the mood to dig, and study measurements, you could find a great option that works for you. I bought a pair off there a few years ago with decent success. They ended up being a little too big, so I spent $15 and had them taken in with great results.

BLACK PUMPS:

Adding a heel to a pair of jeans is a great way to dress up a look. I am not much of a heels person so I prefer a low pump, two inches is usually my max. I like to be able to walk around with assurance I won’t roll an ankle. Many women seem to be pros on tall heels. I am not one of those women, and I’m okay with that. I’m currently rocking the Day Heel in black suede in my shoe collection, and I’ve been really impressed with the fit and comfort of this shoe. I take it in a 10.5 (half size up from my normal shoe size). They have comfortably adjusted to my foot and are easy to walk in. I think the Square Toe Sling Back is super chic. If I worked in an office or needed heels on the regular I would own these. The Editor Heel is an elegant option for the graceful walker, and I love how exotic the Cono Mule is.

One more formula:

If jeans aren’t your thing, a non-bodycon dress with heels is a great option. I’ve worn this dress by Hackwith Design on so many formal occasions now. It never disappoints and can be worn forward and backward. The Elliot Dress by Only Child would be a great option too!

I am not into buying one-time-use items to wear to holiday parties. I think the best outfits coordinate items you can wear over and over in a unique combination, or with standout accessories. Think: an oversized dress with a heel, or a basic shift dress with big artisan earrings. Most of all, when styling your holiday looks, I think it’s super important to feel like yourself. And wearing items you already know and love will really help with that.

Currently Wearing:

Leather Jacket (S), Reformation x Veda | Trujilo Wrap Top (M), ABLE | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s 501’s | Day Heel (10.5), Everlane | Circle Bag, Baggu | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady | Initial Necklace, Nashelle | Initial Cuff, Able

With Love, From San Francisco

One of my favorite things to do in this space is share new brands with you. They usually aren’t new to the world of ethical fashion, but often they are new to me, and sometimes new to you.

Today I bring you: Curator, from San Francisco, CA. Founded in 2005 by Deirdre Nagayama and Stacy Rodgers. Curator specializes in house-designed, locally made clothes that are meant to work for your real life. Think: knit tops, smart pants, and cozy cardigans. Their pieces are easy to style and wear, but still make a statement.

I’m currently wearing and styling the Jules Cardigan in tobacco. I like it because it reads like a jacket but feels like a sweater. It’s lightly quilted and brings a cozy factor that a light jacket would be hard pressed to match.

Curator’s Approach to Size and Fit.

Deirdre and Stacy design all of the clothing sold under the Curator label, and they have a unique fit process. They build all the clothing to work with their very different body shapes. One of them has a large bust, and the other a bigger tush. The women test the designs on their frames and adjust as necessary. Deirdre says when an item fits both of them well, they know it will fit a good cross section of women.

Curator has expanded their staple items into XL sizing, including their Fawn Skirt, Car Coat, Work Shirt, and Overalls, among other items. As the company grows they hope to keep expanding their size range.

Who Makes the Clothes?

They are very intentional about their manufacturing partners. Curator has long worked with two family-owned factories in San Francisco to create their clothing – both of which are within a ten mile drive from their shops.

More on the Jules Cardigan. (And a discount code.)

Beautiful bag, made by my friend Lori.

The Jules Cardigan is a unique garment, and for me it falls a bit on ‘coatigan’ territory, in the best way. As I said, it’s warmer than a (single layer) jacket, but it looks a little more polished than a cardigan. The size run is XS-L, and it comes in seven colors: tobacco (pictured), peacoat blue, green tea, scarlet, mushroom, turmeric, and black.

I’ve styled it a few ways for this post – with slim cut jeans and wide leg pants, and I love how it works with both silhouettes. The Jules Cardigan runs roomy, I took a size small, and it layers nicely over light sweaters. I love the drape of the soft, quilted fabric, it is lightly structured, but doesn’t have an overly boxy fit. But my favorite is definitely the texture! I love the quilted detail.

If you’re in the market for a ‘third’ piece to complete your winter outfits, the Jules Cardigan might be good for you! It retails for $168, but you can use the code ANDREA10 to save 10%, which makes it actually $151.20 – with free shipping! Discount code is good through Friday, December 14th.

A few more items that are catching my eye from Curator: the Work Shirt and the Painter Pants in mud, and I think the Larkspur Dress is very dreamy!

Wearing Lately: the Daily Sweater

$

I had a good run of outfits in the last week or so, and have been essentially wearing a sweater a day. It’s been so cold here, all I want to do is get cozy! I can’t imagine how intense it’s been for everyone experiencing the polar vortex. If that’s you, I hope you’re staying warm!

This week I tried to style my sweaters with a third piece, and I pushed myself to shake up my usual pullover-and-jeans formula. I’ve been trying to employ an extra slow approach to purchases this year. I want to be mindful of decision fatigue when getting dressed, and don’t want to buy anything that’s going to add to that. So far, I’ve bought two things, and neither lasted in my closet. To find out more, read on…

Cardigan no5 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Pima Micro Rib Long Sleeve Tee (M), Everlane | Clyde Work Pant (4/R), in cotton twill, Elizabeth Suzann, SS’17 (similar in cotton canvas) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10)

I wore this last Wednesday, and while I love the color combo, it was an outfit that made me realize this sweater is not for me.

I bought this sweater when it was on sale because I loved the color. Unfortunately I found the style and fit to be a little off for me after wearing it for a few weeks. What I love about Babaa cardigans is the drape, and this style doesn’t have it. It’s a little too fitted and square for my liking.

I also don’t love the buttons or the way the top curls over. Thankfully I was able to sell it to someone else who loves this style.

In other closet news, I sold my brown Kamm pants a month or so ago, and I sorely miss having a pair of brown pants in my closet. I sold my Kamms because that color (Skintone 34) runs slightly small compared to the other sizes of the pants, and I just couldn’t get the fit right for me. To replace them I ordered Doen’s Mojave Pant, which are super cute. But, when I tried them on, I found the front/pocket/belt loop area to be a little too busy for my liking. So, I’ve been on the search for more wide leg options. Future post to come.

Cashmere Rib Sweater (M), Everlane | White Denim (no longer available) (try these) | Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Boots, c/o M.Gemi | | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off)

I was particularly proud of this outfit because I felt great in it, and my friend Ellie gave me the most generous compliment when we met up for coffee. I am a big fan of winter whites, and I love the way the patterned boots finish the look.

Clyde Trench (XS), Elizabeth Suzann | Waffle Knit Sweater (S), c/o Everlane | Jeans, old Everlane (similar) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off)

I ordered this beautiful coat in December with the discount code Lee and I shared. It had been on my list ever since I bought the cream version last spring. This time I decided to go down to an extra small, and I like the fit a little better. The overall weight of the coat feels a lot lighter (and less like it’s tugging me down). The sleeves are pretty short though! Hopefully long sleeves underneath will be enough. Felt seriously rad in this outfit.

Jules Cardigan (S), c/o Curator SF | Alpaca Crew (M), Everlane | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off)

My version of casual Saturday, these sneakers are getting lots of love! The only reason why I wear boots on other days is that I can put them on faster.

Sweater Coat, Aritizia, color from FW’17 | Cashmere Rib Sweater (M), Everlane | Jeans, vintage Levi’s 517’s, Etsy | Boots, c/o M.Gemi | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off)

It was a sweater-on-sweater day to combat the cold. If it’s not clear already I am completely a fan of tone-on-tone dressing. I love my outfits 99% of the time I do it.

Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | T Sweater (FW’16), c/o Jamie + the Jones | Striped Button Up, Tradlands (sold out, similar) | High Rise Straight Jean (28), AGOLDE | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off)

Please forgive the cell phone quality photo here. I liked this outfit so much, and it’s the only photo I have. I love the contrast of the dressy collared shirt and the casual sneaker. Layering a button up under this sweater makes it extra cozy this time of year. And, I must share: after 2+ years of wearing this sweater, it is still in rocking shape with very little pilling on it.

Sweater Jacket, c/o Hackwith Design House (from FW’17, no longer available) | Striped Tee, thrifted Ralph Lauren (very similar) | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) | Boots, Loeffler Randall (purchased in FW’16, no longer available – similar option) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

I love the casual-vintage vibe of this outfit so much. These are my favorite, most-worn jeans, my boots have a nice patina now, and the drapey cardigan adds an extra level of interest (and keeps me warm). If I could figure out how to capture this vibe and dress in it everyday, I would.

Pima Micro Rib Long Sleeve Tee (M), Everlane | Denim Jumpsuit (M), REIFhaus (same in hemp canvas) | Boots, Loeffler Randall (purchased in FW’16, no longer available – similar option)

Jumpsuits are perfect for the days when you just want to chill in your sweats, but can’t. This denim number is a little thicker and warmer than my others, and I added my thick puffer coat when I left the house. The simplicity of this outfit is very satisfying to me.

I hope you’re staying cozy! It’s a cold one this week in the States!

Wearing Lately: A Wide Leg Story

Okay, I didn’t actually wear wide leg pants every single day the past few weeks, but I can safely say I’ve figured out how to wear them comfortably in the cold. (Long socks and ankle-covering shoes.)

And it’s a good thing because old man winter finally showed his face in western Oregon. We’ve had a relatively mild winter (think temps in the 40’s and up, with dryer than normal conditions). All that changed in the last few weeks, we even had a ‘snow day.’

Here’s a look at what I’ve been wearing.

Everlane Alpaca Crew
Alpaca Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (similar in a high rise) | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Tortoise Hoops, c/o Baleen
Everlane Alpaca Crew

Black boots are one of those things I feel like I ‘need’ in my closet, but I don’t wear a ton of these days. This winter I’ve been way more into the light and warm tones, but on this day I wanted to give my black boots a little love. Note the heather texture of this sweater, a favorite detail of mine!

Kamm Pants, Midnight, Everlane Alpaca Sweater
Alpaca Crew (M), Everlane | Pants (6/M), Jesse Kamm | Waterproof Bootie, Aquatalia (similar)

I can’t believe it took me so long to stumble upon this outfit combination. I love how warm the color of this blue sweater is, and of course I love the blue-on-blue combination. Dressing in various shades of one color is the easiest way I know to look pulled together with minimal effort.

L'envers Sweater, No.6 Clog Boots
Juliette Jumper, c/o L’Envers | Liza High Waist Straight Leg Jean (28), Reformation | Clog Boots (42), No.6 (similar)

Balloon sleeves, undershirts and clog boots keeping me warm in the middle of the week.

Waffle Knit Sweater, Everlane, (no longer avail.) (similar) | White Denim (no longer avail.), c/o ABLE (try these) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10)

Living my winter-whites dream. Sometimes wearing all white feels risky, and some days it does not. In case you missed it, I wrote all about how I keep my whites clean. And yes, I wear them around my kids.

Shirt, M, from the men’s section (similar) | Turtleneck, Splendid | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) | Waterproof Bootie, Aquatalia (similar) | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off) | Legacy Hoops, ABLE

Pretending I’m back in the 1990’s, but as grown up me instead of 10-year-old me. It’s weird to be old enough to see fashion you remember so clearly come back full circle. It’s even weirder to like it. I loved the layering of this outfit, a nice change up from my sweater parade.

Kamm Pants, Tobacco
Waffle Knit Sweater (S), c/o Everlane | Pants, (6), Jesse Kamm | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Legacy Hoops, ABLE
Patagonia Down with it Parka
Beanie, self-knit (read more here) | Down With It Parka, Patagonia (on sale here, more sizes here, I’m wearing a M, it runs small) | Laura Bag, c/o MOIMOI (use code ANDREA10 for 10% off)

I finally landed on a pair of brown pants. I have mixed feelings about the price of them, and I’m working on a blog post featuring wide legs pants for different budgets. For now I’m crossing my fingers that these serve me as well as my blue pair have. After I break them in (eep!).

Pyne & Smith Linen Dress, No.6 Clog Boots
Alpaca Cardigan, from FW’16 (similar) | Model No.17 Dress, c/o Pyne & Smith, SS’18 | Clog Boots (42), No.6 (similar)

Snow was in the forecast on this day, so naturally I put on a dress. Actually, I’ve been reading a novel set in 1940’s France, and I was inspired to see if I could stay as warm in the winter in a dress as the characters in my book. Turns out I can. Woolen stockings and an alpaca cardigan go a long way to retain warmth!

Lauren Winter Wide Pants, Everlane Day Boot
V Neck Sweater (M), Everlane | Wide Pant, Lauren Winter, FW’16 (love this option) | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane

This outfit is an interesting juxtaposition to the day before. It’s similar in fit (loose and comfortable), silhouette (hourglass), and function, but it’s entirely modern compared to the old-world feel of a long dress.

On another note: I haven’t worn this sweater in quite some time, and almost parted ways with it a few weeks ago. Finally, I gave it a little shave, and it is as good as new!

How are your winter outfits coming along? Are you ready for spring yet?!

Embracing Whimsy

I am, by nature, equal parts goofy and equal parts serious. In recent years, however, I feel like my serious side has really taken over. Probably because I’m usually so focused on getting stuff done. Raising three kids and being a working mom is no joke. There is always a to-do list as long as my arm. Most nights my husband and I go to bed wishing there were more hours in the day (and that we had a magic night maid to come do all the laundry).

The problem with my serious side eclipsing my fun side is that it starts to bleed over to my closet in a serious way (see what I did there?). When I am making purchases or selecting items from brands I work with, the word PRACTICAL, PRACTICAL, PRACTICAL is always scrolling across my brain.

Will it work around my kids? Will it fit under my winter coat? Will I be too cold? Will I be too hot? Will it show too much skin? Will I look too over the top?

But I finally realized that sometimes I need to quiet that voice, and go for the WHIMSICAL, and embrace items that serve me in more than just the ‘practical’ ways.

Will I feel beautiful in it? Will I feel vibrant and alive? Will it make me want to flirt with my husband more? Will I walk confidently into a room? Will I want to twirl outside with my daughters? Will I turn up with music in the car just a little bit louder?

This spring I’m stepping out of my comfort zone a little bit, I’m embracing cropped tops, big ruffles and long ties. I’m letting the practical take a pause here and there and I’m embracing whimsy and the dance moves that come with it.

Everlane Lately: Wearing + Wanting

This post is sponsored by Everlane. All thoughts, ideas and content are my own.

It’s no secret I have a long-standing affinity for Everlane. I bought my first t-shirt from them 5 years ago, back when they offered only a handful of items (you can read my ancient review here). Currently, their line is expansive, and I have been fortunate to add many of their offerings to my closet. Today I’m kicking off a brand new, semi-regular series where I check in on the ‘Everlane’ portion of my closet. The goal, is to discuss:

1 // Which pieces are serving me well right now.
2 // What I’ve recently added.
3 // My thoughts on new arrivals/coming soon items.

My hope is that by sharing my experiences and outfits, you can envision which pieces might work well for you and how they would work with what’s currently in your closet. Let’s get to the clothes, shall we?

CURRENTLY WEARING:

This winter I’ve been wearing my ReNew Puffer AND my Cocoon Coat on regular rotation. One of the main reasons — the oversized fit. I can wear them over ANY of my chunky sweaters, no matter how dolman the sleeve. And I can do so comfortably. There’s nothing worse than feeling like a winter sausage when trying to stay warm.

The puffer is thick and heavy, and rain resistant, so I tend to wear that on the cold and rainy days. On dry days, I wear my cocoon coat over thick sweaters.

The Cocoon Coat has been a bit of a unicorn for me. I have purchased it in THREE (!!) colors before finally landing on a color and size that works for me. I bought it in light gray last year and never wore it. It felt too ‘serious’ and hipster-ish (if that’s even possible) for my lifestyle. This fall, I bought it in the new shade of Peat, in a size down, and that was the winning combination. The smaller size and dark, warm color were exactly what I needed to make this coat work for me. I feel less dressy, less hipster-ish and infinitely more me. I have worn this coat multiple times per week since I bought it. It looks great with a pullover sweater and sneakers.

The Cashmere Round Rib Crew has been at the top of my sweater rotation lately because it’s: 1) ivory (fav color family), 2) soft, 3) drapey, and 4) warm. It’s everything for me in a sweater! My family is probably tired of seeing me in it all the time. The fit of this is just so good. (You can see another view here.) I’ve also been wearing my Alpaca Crew Sweaters quite a bit. The fit is similar, and the texture is a bit fuzzier.

And guess what I’m constantly wearing, that you rarely see? Everlane’s Pima Mico Rib Scoop Tees, which I own in three colors. They’re perfect for layering under sweaters to keep yourself warm, and the sweaters clean. The scoop works well because it doesn’t peek out. They can also be worn alone, and look very cute tucked into high-waisted jeans.

RECENTLY ADDED:

I’m probably the last person on the Internet to jump on board with the Day Boots, but sometimes that’s my approach to wildly popular items. I like to sit back, and observe a bit before I decide to partake. After a winter of being unable to shake this ecru color from my mind, I decided to try out the Day Boots in Ecru, and I love them. I had previously got them in black, and they are super chic. But something about the ecru makes them a lot more wearable in my day-to-day life.

As my love for non-skinny pants increases, so does my need for fitted tops. I recently added the Soft Cotton Sweater (not pictured) because it’s the perfect (warm) top to wear with all my wide leg pants. I have it in Bone, and my favorite feature (besides the fit) is that it’s machine washable!

The 90’s Cheeky Jeans quickly caught my attention when I saw that it had a button fly and a 90210-memory-jogging wash. I shared about these on Instagram the other day and was met with a flurry of questions. I’ll try my best to distill all my Cheeky-loving knowledge into one smart paragraph for you.

The 90’s Cheeky is made from cotton denim (instead of stretch denim like the original Cheeky’s), it features a button fly, and the washes harken back to their namesake 1990’s. For these reasons I really like them. I took them in size 27, just like my other Cheeky’s (which is a size down). The cotton has softened and relaxed, just a bit, with wear. They are comfortable to sit in and look really good with white shirts.

NEW ARRIVALS + COMING SOON ITEMS:

Everybody has been talking about the Rain Boots. I think they look cute, even in their chunky state, and I really like the idea of rain boots that aren’t black. I bought myself a pair of the boots in Chestnut, but they were too big. I sized down to a 9, and they’re due on my porch this week. I’ll keep you posted.

The Shrunken Shirt caught my eye on the Coming Soon page because of that lovely olive-y shade. Will be ordering one of these on Thursday!

What I Wore: Clogs with Socks + Lots of Brown

$

Sometimes I wonder if I’m going to look back on this era of my personal style with the same chagrin we look back at the ‘brown everything‘ phase of the 70’s. Or, perhaps I’ll remember it fondly.

I love experimenting with what I wear. It’s one of my favorite mediums for expressing myself in this stage of life. When I was in high school I was too timid to follow my inner style voice, instead preferring to fall in line with what others were wearing. Now, I’m old enough to know better than to care too much what other people think. I still feel a bit limited by it, but not nearly the same way as when I was a teen.

The last few weeks have been pretty fun and very brown. Here’s a look at what I’ve been wearing…

The Coverall (M), c/o muumuu (on major sale right now!) | Alpaca Cardigan, from FW’16 (similar) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

This is my cool-mom power suit. Though I hold that thought lightly. It’s as comfortable as yoga pants (maybe more because I don’t have to worry about VPL), a lot more unique, and less athleisure-leaning.

Cardigan (M/L) Cuyana | Striped Tee, thrifted Ralph Lauren (very similar) | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | Sneakers (41), Veja | Backpack, old (similar)

Another casual-fun look. It’s so nice to have a pair of pants this color in my closet. I love the way this tan shade warms up all my white, blue and cream tops. Working on my exposed sock game, how’d I do?

Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Square Cotton Crew (M), c/o Everlane | White Wide Leg Denim, c/o ABLE | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Necklace, gift from husband | Backpack, old (similar)

This outfit skews a little dressy for my everyday, but I was pretty eager to pair these boots and pants. In order to make it a tad more casual I used a backpack for a purse. The olive-peat-white-cream color palette makes me very happy.

Clyde Trench (XS), Elizabeth Suzann | Soft Cotton Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) + (super similar in a high rise) | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Backpack, old (similar)

Testing out the new cotton sweaters from Everlane here. It’s a little hard to see, but it wears kind of like a thick knit shirt. It’s fitted and you can tuck it in. I love the extra layer of warmth it lends. This is the time of year where I’m pretty much addicted to wearing sweaters every day to stay warm.

Baronne Duster (M), Esby (sadly this is nearly sold out, but I’ve seen a few versions around including this one and similar versions from this shop) | V Neck Sweater (M), Everlane | Cheeky Jean in washed black (27R), Everlane | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Tortoise Hoops, c/o Baleen

Trying hard to style this duster again. I love it so much, in theory, but have yet to learn how to wear it well. I like the volume play here between this and the slim cut jeans. I recently tried it on with wide legs and loved it. Will have to try that out soon! Note how the dark earrings tied into the overall color palette.

“Nest” print by Augusto B.M. c/o Spacey Studios.

Cashmere Rib Round Crew Sweater (M), Everlane | 90’s Cheeky Jean (27), c/o Everlane | Waterproof Bootie, Aquatalia (similar)

Living my best 90’s life in these jeans. I got soooo many questions about them when I shared on Instagram, and did my best to answer them in last week’s blog post. They are super cute jeans, and they feel more like skinnies on me than straight leg. I love, love the high waist, button fly and stone wash (do we still use that phrase?).

Juliette Jumper, c/o L’Envers | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation | Rain Boots (9), Everlane

Mom on duty reporting back with more practical outfits: a chunky wool knit, crop flare jeans and rain boots.

Cashmere Rib Round Crew Sweater (M), Everlane | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | Clogs, No.6 (similar) | Slice Hoops, c/o Baleen

When you match your house… It took me a lot of courage to wear this socks and clogs combination out of the house. I had to wrestle with that ‘what will other people think’ factor. At first I had on ankle boots, but what I really wanted to wear were clogs (for comfort, ease and casual factor), so I went for it. I did feel a little funny, but I also had a lot of satisfaction.

Leather Jacket (S), Reformation x Veda | Raglan Sweater, 5+ years old, (similar) | Wide Pant, Lauren Winter, FW’16 (love this option) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana | Scarf (pattern here) | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady | Verge Necklace, c/o Favor Jewelry

I wore this on Saturday, a day I often go for a super casual combo. On this day, I wanted to feel as comfy as I do in my go-to vintage jeans, but a bit more styled. Adding a leather jacket and stand-out pants took my sweater and sneaks to the next level.

Smiles all around! Thanks for reading through my round-up of looks!

How to Wear Linen Pants in the Winter

$
0
0

Part of what I love about summer is the free-flowing, laid-back nature of the season. And right about now, on the 147,682nd day of winter, it sounds very appealing. Winter is full of productivity, early mornings, school schedules, sport schedules, music schedules, and freezing cold mornings accessorized by lots of layers and coats. Strolling outside on a warm afternoon with an iced coffee in hand and a novel tucked under my arm, looking for a place to relax, sounds really good.

When I picture myself getting dressed in the summer it usually involves linen and elastic waist bands, because a) it’s too hot to bother with other types of clothing, b) the casual season demands it, and, c) I imagine myself as a summer goddess with sunglasses on my face and fabrics flowing behind me (until I trip on a raised sidewalk or have to break up a sibling fight).

Because it’s still winter, I decided to channel all these 75-degree plus vibes via my wardrobe. With, you guessed it, elastic waist, linen pants.

I bring you Part One of my two-part Linen Pant Series. Today, I’m sharing how to wear linen pants in the winter and stay cozy. Tomorrow, I’ll be back showing you how I plan to style them for spring and summer (with bated breath for the upcoming season).

Stay tuned at the end of this post for a discount code to one of my very favorite independent designers: Only Child.

LOOK ONE: Hidden Layers

Okay, the layers may not be hidden per se, but they are kind of low on the radar: thick tights and a merino base layer turtleneck (topped with a chunky cardigan sweater jacket). The tights I wear with my linen pants are just regular tights, but if you owned wool tights and paired it with a wool turtleneck, you’d be one warm cookie. (If you’re not a tights lover, leggings would do the trick.)

Bonus: the peek of tights plays in so well with the exposed sock trend right now. I love this look because of the cohesive color palette and the contrast of black at the ankle.

For overall styling of this look, I like the unexpected combo of the slouchy cardigan with the relaxed style pants. The key: a streamlined and minimal shoe. If I was wearing bulky shoes the overall look would probably be too visually ‘heavy’ for my taste.

Key factors – keep warm with tights underneath and double sweaters on top.

Outfit Details:

Sweater Jacket, a few seasons old, no longer available (try this option) / Merino Turtleneck, thrifted (similar in cotton or cashmere) / Cove Pants* (M) in Oatmeal Linen, c/o Only Child** / Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane / Circle Bag, Baggu / Mobula Necklace, c/o Loop Jewelry – coming soon to their shop!

LOOK TWO: Sweaters and Jacket Sandwiches

This is such a fun, relaxed, summer-esque look for me, I can practically feel the sand in my toes. The key to keeping warm in this outfit is sweaters (again) and jacket sandwiches. The outfit is a complete look as pictured but, when it’s time to head out the door, an oversized wool coat or a relaxed fit parka goes a long way to keep you warm. And, the longer the better. I find when wearing linen pants in cold temperatures, if my top layers go to my knees, my calves can stick it out no problem (limited exposure of course).

Key factors – keep warm with a thin sweater followed by a light jacket, followed by a heavy jacket. Add knee socks for good measure.

Outfit Details:

Denim Jacket, Levi’s (similar) | Soft Cotton Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Cove Pants* (M) in Oatmeal Linen, c/o Only Child** / Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) / Bag, Vintage Dooney & Bourke (similar, new) (similar, vintage)

*A quick note on the fit of the Cove Pants. I featured the same style, but the tencel version, back in the fall. Since then, Only Child has updated the fit of the pants to give them a taller rise, making them extra comfy and flattering. I’m a big fan of the update!

3 Looks: How I’m Styling my Wide Leg Linen Pants for Spring + Summer

Only Child Cove Pants In Linen

When you get to play dress up in a beautiful location, in beautiful clothes with your friend/photographer, it’s a pretty fun time. Add a menagerie of lush plants and I’m happy as a clam.

Today I’m bringing you the second half of my Linen Pant series. Yesterday, I shared how to style linen pants and keep cozy. And today, I’m styling these pants into some warm weather looks, designed to have fun in!

Stay tuned at the end of this post for a discount code to Only Child, in celebration of these lovely pants AND the launch of their much-anticipated Spring 2019 collection!

But first, an ode to non-restricting pants. There are plenty of times when I am in the mood for some good structure in my outfit, by way of tailored canvas pants or hip-hugging jeans. But there are just as many (if not more) times when I am in the mood for some pants that make me feel relaxed. Thus, my affinity for flowy, elastic waist pants. They offer a hard-to-beat silhouette with little to no price to pay via comfort.

However, It’s really tempting when wearing something with an elastic waist to enter into ‘hyper-critical mode’ about my body. I start to go down a line of thinking that tells me I need to have a tiny, narrow waist, or these pants won’t look good. I fall prey to this idea that beauty is singular. I mentally beat myself and wonder why is my lower abdomen rounded and why do my pants feel two sizes too small by the end of the day?

I do not hold anyone else to this standard. In fact, I love all the body-positivity I am seeing these days from my favorite brands and influencers on social media. So why do I apply this very narrow standard of beauty to myself? It doesn’t make any sense. But I’m slowly, and gently working on giving myself permission to see the beauty in my body, just the way it is. And if you struggle in the some of the same ways I do, I hope you find a way to celebrate your beauty instead of looking for flaws.

Well OKAY! Who knew elastic waist pants would take us there? But it did, and I’m okay with that. Let’s get to the looks, shall we?

LOOK ONE: Light + Breezy

Styling these pants for winter is fun but, I have to say, styling them for warmer weather is even better. They feel celebratory and relaxing.

This oatmeal color is a perfect partner for all my white shirts. For a fun play on volume I added this loose and wide top to keep with the loose and beach-y vibe of the pants. Barely-there sandals help balance the volume of the fabrics, and the hat comes in nicely as the ‘third piece.’

LOOK TWO: Vintage Vibes

I love this look so much. It feels a little bold, but I am trying to get better at embracing my whimsy and go for bold outfits if that’s where my style-loving heart is leading me. Because, why not?

The controlled color palette helps keep this look in my wheelhouse (too many colors would definitely feel like ‘too much’ for me in a busy look like this). I added a few beloved items – a necklace from my husband I’ve had for a long time, and my favorite vintage sisal tote. It gives the look a ‘lived-in’ and ‘loved’ feel.

LOOK THREE: Classic Clean Lines

This look feels very ‘classic Andrea,’ probably because you’ve seen me wear these mules many, many times, and this shirt quite a bit over the last few years. I love it when a new item in my closet gives new life to what I already own. It’s a much better feeling than when I feel like I have to run out and buy more new things to make it work.

I like how the tied waist brings clean lines and an overall hour glass silhouette to this look. Now all I need is some warm weather!

Style Tip – When considering a purchase, ask yourself if it will bring new life to old favorites, or if it will send you shopping for more items to ‘make it work’?

Outfit Details:

Luzon Tie Top (from Spring ’17), c/o Only Child (same in solid black) | Cove Pants* (M) in Oatmeal Linen, c/o Only Child** / Mariella Mule, c/o Nisolo / Necklace, gift from my husband

*A quick note on the fit of the Cove Pants. I featured the same style, but the tencel version, back in the fall. Since then, Only Child has updated the fit of the pants to give them a taller rise, making them extra comfy and flattering. I’m a big fan of the update!

What I Wore: Wide Leg Style + A Touch of Spring

We made it guys! We’ve survived winter!! The sun has been shining the last several days, and it has felt WONDERFUL. For the better part of winter in Western Oregon, it is rainy and overcast, and our collective vitamin D deficiency soars. Now I feel like a mama bear ready to come out of my winter cave and roar in excitement for the spring and summer months.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but it reflects how I’ve felt these last few days. Of course this spring-like weather is only temporary and we have rain and 50-degree temps in the forecast. If you live anywhere north or northeast of here, you probably have lots of winter left too. (We can do this!)

While I was rejoicing in the warm temps this week, styling my looks wasn’t nearly as intuitive. I had to think quite a bit harder about what to wear. When you can bare your ankles again and don less than one sweater, suddenly the whole closet opens up! Which is both wonderful and daunting.

Here’s a look at the outfits I’ve been wearing over the last two weeks.

Sweater Coat, Aritizia, color from FW’17 | Mock Bodysuit (M), c/o Fauxgerty | Wide Leg Jumper, c/o HDH Basics | Day Heel (10.5), Everlane | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

I saw Madi Reimer wearing the same jumpsuit the other day, and it inspired me to pull mine out. It’s such a unique, statement-y piece that I tend to shy away from it. But I challenged myself to create a look and loved this so much.

Sweater Coat, Aritizia, color from FW’17 | Merino Turtleneck, thrifted (similar in cotton or cashmere) | Cove Pants (M) in Oatmeal Linen, c/o Only Child (use code: Seasons15 to save 15% through 3/27) | High Top Cons, thrifted (love this USA made option) | Vintage Sisal Bag, Etsy | Initial Necklace, Nashelle

Hello linen pants in winter. I put my own advice to work here and wore leggings under these (this was before the warmer days). I was ultra cozy, but the legging and tucked-in sweater added more bulk to my hips than I was comfortable with. Next time I would opt for tights instead. Overall, I still really loved the look of this, especially the combination of the tailored sweater-jacket and the grungy sneakers.

Striped Long Sleeve Tee (M), Everlane | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | High Top Cons, thrifted (love this USA made option)

Basic pieces for a not-so-basic look. I feel 100% me in this outfit. It serves my personal sense of style and my ability to be an accessible mom (ie. nothing too fussy or impractical for doing all the things with my kids).

Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Cardigan no19 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Shrunken Cotton Shirt (6), Everlane | Liza High Waist Straight Leg Jean (28 – hemmed), Reformation | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Backpack, Neva Opet

I wore this outfit to the local science museum on a little day-date with my youngest. Just like the look before it, I felt it served my personal sense of style well, and my ability to be able-bodied and present with my son without fussing about with my clothes. Key reasons: cool and oversized coat (style points) sneakers (comfort points) and backpack purse (style and hands-free points).

You can see the layered-down version of my outfit below, including my new ultra soft, shrunken top from Everlane. It’s a little texture-y and wrinkle prone, but I think that makes it look more relaxed. I bought it because I love the color, and was pleasantly surprised by how soft and feminine the fit is! I think it will look super cute with vintage jeans and sandals (and maybe a sisal bag).

Hat, Brookes Boswell | Shrunken Denim Jacket (M), c/o Everlane | Merino Turtleneck, thrifted (similar in cotton or cashmere) | Wide Leg Chino (6), c/o Everlane | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane

I received these wide leg chinos from Everlane to help promote their release, and I found myself more into them than I expected. I love wide leg pants (as you probably know) and I have pretty high standards for what works for me.

These passed muster because they are different enough from my other favorites (elastic waist and Kamms) that they don’t compete. These are a decidedly spring pant. They are cropped, and the fabric is very lightweight. They hug my hips but are still very loose, which makes them great for comfort/air flow.

I love this outfit because the hat is a great ‘third piece’ and the brown socks are my absolute favorite detail. I did that on accident by the way. I had different pants on at first, but switched to these, and then kept the socks on. I wish I could say I was that intentional.

Donegal Sweater, Everlane (from spring ’16, similar option) | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | Boots, Loeffler Randall (purchased in FW’16, no longer available – similar option) | Backpack, Neva Opet

I’m just gonna go ahead and say it: I need a haircut and I’ve semi given up on styling it until my next chop. (Which is still 2+ weeks away!) On my last visit I had my stylist add some subtle layers which turned out to be a BAD idea, and now my hair is very thin on the ends. Ugh, I don’t even like writing about it here, but it’s just the truth. Chop, chop coming in the near future, and I’m very excited!

As for the outfit, I’d love to know what you think of the brown plays – too much, or are you into it?

Cardigan no19 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Striped Tee, thrifted Ralph Lauren (very similar) | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation (similar) | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith | Backpack, Neva Opet

Do you know what’s amazing? Bringing out my ankles again. WHY is it so much easier to build an outfit with exposed ankles!?!?! This was the first of our warm days. Get ready for the ankle show to follow!

I really like this sweater because of the unique shape, and the fact that it can pretty much double as a jacket because it’s so warm. I really want it in a second color, which is always the natural reaction when I like something. But if I did that everytime I liked something, I think those items wouldn’t be as exciting and my closet would start to feel redundant.

Shrunken Denim Jacket (M), c/o Everlane | Pima Micro Rib Scoop Neck Tee (M), Everlane |Cove Pants (M) in Oatmeal Linen, c/o Only Child (use code: Seasons15 to save 15% through 3/27) | Chloe Peep Toe Clog (41) in Blush nubuck, Bryr | Backpack, Neva Opet | Classic Wayfarer, Ray-Ban

Mr. Seasons and I celebrated our 12th anniversary on this day, and for the first time in ages (on our anniversary) it was warm and sunny!! We delighted ourselves by eating sliders and fries on the patio of a local restaurant and then we went to see Captain Marvel.

T Sweater (FW16), c/o Jamie + the Jones | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation (similar) | Chloe Closed Toe Clog (41) in Sienna, c/o Bryr | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

More ankles, and the neck-bearing T Sweater, which is often too chilly for full winter. Feeling really good about this look.

Jane Blouse (M), Dôen | 90’s Cheeky Jean (27), c/o Everlane | Mariella Mule, c/o Nisolo | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

Embracing whimsy with this old favorite from Doen. I love the soft drape and small print. I wear it sometimes in the winter, buried under sweaters, and it was fun to wear it and not have to don another layer. Yay sun + spring!!

Shrunken Denim Jacket (M), c/o Everlane | Top, Miranda Bennett (similar) | Wide Leg Chino (6), c/o Everlane | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith

Happy that it was warm enough to wear these chinos again, but not happy that I had to iron them. Pulled this very favorite top of mine out of winter hibernation, and I’m excited to style it into the spring and summer. It’s a dusty-blush color that I love, which seems oddly hard to find! Once again, excited for ankles and the sun!

I think I might start doing these posts weekly again instead of every other week, because they are getting so LONG. I do find it super helpful to study my outfits, and I hope it’s interesting for you too. Putting the microscope to what I wear really helps me understand what did and didn’t work, and why. If you’re looking to hone your personal style a bit, I highly recommend it.

Thanks so much for reading and stopping by!

What I Wore: Mom Outfits

You know those days when your outfits don’t feel particularly like a look, and instead, more like items you put on your body to cover it and stay warm? Well, that’s what I’ve been wearing lately. These looks are very much: mom-on-duty. And since I like to keep things real on the blog, I’m going to share them with you guys. (Don’t worry, the pics above are definitely the highlights.)

Hopefully something you see will spark inspiration in your own closet, for your mom-duty days, or your off-duty weekends.

Here’s a look at the outfits I’ve been wearing…

Cardigan (M/L) Cuyana | Pima Micro Rib Long Sleeve Tee (M), Everlane | Sailor Pants in Cowboy Blue (6), Jesse Kamm (similar in multiple inseams) | Chloe Closed Toe Clog (41) in Sienna c/o Bryr | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

Storytime: I am currently the owner of two pairs of wide leg denim jeans. I bought these ones at the beginning of March before I knew the Everlane ones were coming. If I had known about those, I might have held off on these. However, the fit on the two pairs is pretty different, and I will probably keep both. The rise and the inseam on the Kamms is a bit more dramatic, while the shape of the Everlane ones is a bit more traditional. You can see more of them in the last outfit of this post.

Cardigan no18 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Chambray, J.Crew SS’16, (similar in relaxed fit) | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s | (super similar in a high rise) | Sneakers (41), Veja

An outfit comprised of closet favorites, what could be better? Weather that allows you to wear them! I 100% love this look and will be pinning it to my favorites board and wearing it again.

The Coverall (M), c/o muumuu (currently on major sale!) | Sweater Jacket, c/o Hackwith Design House (from FW’17, no longer available) | Chloe Peep Toe Clog (41) in Blush nubuck, Bryr | Vintage Sisal Bag, Etsy

Sunday is hands-down the ‘dressiest’ day of the week for me. We go to a very casual church, but I love the chance to put a little something ‘extra’ into what I wear. Typically, that means a shoe with some elevation. I was inspired to wear nude heels (clogs) with these coveralls after seeing Emily Henderson do it (why is she so cute in everything?!). I LOVE this look. Later in the day, I put on my white sneakers for running around with the fam.

Clyde Trench (XS), Elizabeth Suzann | Soft Cotton Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation (similar) | Sneakers (41), Veja | Backpack, Neva Opet

Remember when I used to take outfit pics in the kitchen? Not my favorite, but since it was spring break, the rest of house was covered with kids and toys – no joke.

This outfit is super cozy and functional, and I love the elevation that the jacket adds, it’s way more interesting than donning a fleece jacket (like I had been living in the past few days prior).

Cardigan no18 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Jeans, vintage | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith | Circle Bag, Minnie + George (no longer available) love THIS option

I’m sharing this one, in the interest of talking about outfits I don’t love and why. I love this sweater, but I’m having a hard time with the rest of it. I thrifted the jeans awhile back, they are slimmer-fitting 501’s from a few decades back, and the length/color is a bit off for me. I think they will be my next DIY project. I’m going to try distressing them and bleaching them. Let me know if you are interested in seeing the process and I’ll document it for the blog!

The shoes I still like, but I feel like they look funny with certain pants. Going to keep working on styling them.

Shrunken Denim Jacket (M), c/o Everlane | Pima Micro Rib Long Sleeve Tee (M), Everlane | Cove Pants (M) in Oatmeal Linen, c/o Only Child |Birkenstocks | Circle Bag, Minnie + George (no longer available) love THIS option

Wearing these pants makes me feel as zen as I look in this photo. Especially when it’s warm enough to wear Birkenstocks!

Please see below for my earring game, would love to stack these ears up a little more! Thinking about a third hole soon…

Twist Midi Hoops c/o Mejuri – save 10% with my referral link | Pyramid Studs, Zoe Chicco

Alta Top in white linen, Only Child x Seasons + Salt (from Spring ’17, same in oatmeal linen) | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | Huaraches (9.5), Nisolo | Mobula Necklace, c/o Loop Jewelry – use code SEASONS15 to save 15% | Scrunchie, TwoFold

Linen scrunchie for the win. I put my hair up in a ponytail right after I took this photo. Love the subtle tones in this outfit. Also, working again on my ear stack…

Large Hoops + Twist Midi Hoops c/o Mejuri – save 10% with my referral link

Waffle Knit Sweater (S), c/o Everlane | Wide Leg Denim, c/o Everlane (coming soon) |Clogs, No.6 (similar) | Circle Bag, Minnie + George (no longer available) love THIS option | Necklace, Nashelle

Lastly, a look at these new wide leg jeans from Everlane! They’re not out yet, but they are releasing them via email list only. You can sign up with my link right here.

I posted a ton about these pants on Instagram, but I know some of you folks don’t use it (very impressive!), so I’ll share a little here. I got these in two sizes (27 and 28) and, while they both fit, the 28 felt more comfy. The rise is about 11″ and the inseam about 26″. They are 100% cotton denim, and coming as a limited release to email subscribers only. I think they are a fun, but similar alternative to Kamm’s if you’re looking for the style without the big investment. These will retail for $78.

That’s all for today. Thanks so much for stopping by!
